May Day 2021 - UnionsWA

May Day 2021

May Day 2021 has been cancelled, no further RSVP's are sought. Here is the related message from UnionsWA Owen Whittle, Acting Secretary:

May Day and International Workers' Memorial Day are two key events in our calendar as unionists.

As disappointing and distressing as this news will be for us, I regret to advise that after consulting with other elected officials I have decided that we must cancel both events this year.

We won't know until later this week what restrictions will apply for large events such as May Day, planned for this Sunday.  However, we do know that only a few days notice of any changes is likely, giving insufficient time to comply, even if those restrictions would allow for the event to proceed at all.

The outdoor crowd COVID restrictions already in place over the coming days mean that we will be unable to hold Workers' Memorial Day as planned.

Individuals and families may wish to lay their own wreaths while wearing masks, respecting safe distancing and safe numbers (i.e. no more than 20 people at a time) at Solidarity Park. If visiting the park please give family members the space and time to reflect and remember loved ones.

As unionists we all respect the importance of health and safety and I appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

In unity,

Owen Whittle

Acting Secretary
