May Day
May Day Festival & March
May Day Festival & March / Sunday 5th May 2013 / Fremantle Esplanade / 12noon – 4.30pm
The annual MAY DAY festival traditionally plays a big part to help recognise the achievements of working people, so come and celebrate the victory in achieving the 8 hour work day in Australia in true Fremantle style.
Perth’s MAY DAY is supported by UNIONSWA with free live entertainment, performances, food, rides & family activities.
MARCH @ 12noon - The March begins on Marine Parade, and then travels throughout the streets of Fremantle (Norfolk Street, South Terrace & High Street). Leading the way will be Beleza Samba Group making as much noise as possible.
FESTIVAL @ 1.00pm - When the marchers complete the route and return to the Esplanade, our guest speaker will take the stage to highlight current campaigns (speakers TBC); followed by a series of live entertainment, DJs and plenty of family festival fun.
Live entertainment with:
*Dilip N the Davs -
Fresh from recording their second album, Dilip N the Davs are Fremantle’s busiest and most dynamic original party band. Their up-tempo, high – octane music and good vibes will be sure to keep the May Day Festival punters toe tapping and hip swinging throughout the afternoon as their funky reggae tinged rock grooves always gets the audience moving! Be there when this large 6 piece band erupt into an inferno of rhythm!
The ‘Pimps of Sound’ have had a dream first year which saw them supporting international acts, headlining local events, playing major local festivals and of course, delivering high energy, DnB tunes to packed dance floors. Don’t miss their vibrant live show, which includes their trademark liquid style fusing Latin, jazz, afro beat, jungle and hip hop.
Before, between and after each band, there will be a DJ playing some rocking tunes to help keep you entertained right throughout your May Day festival.
For the children:
*Free show rides
Children at May Day will be treated to free show rides, bouncy castle action, and dad (& mum) can even get involved by testing their ‘strong man’ skills. For the bigger children we will have bumper cars and an obstacle course, and for the really little ones there will be a toddler’s tent. Enjoy all free rides between 1.00pm & 4.00pm.
*Roaming entertainment
Keep an eye out for the talented ‘Beatknickers’ as they perform their Instant Art, Beat Poetry to Bongos & Mini Guitar, and show off their fine circus skills whilst careening through the crowd this May Day.
*Petting Zoo
The hugely popular and much loved Old MacDonald’s Travelling Farm will return again in 2013.
*Face Painters
There will be free face paints for the children this May Day, try to get in early, as these talented teenagers tend to draw a lot of attention. Free face paints from 1.00pm – 3.30pm.
Union & Community Stalls:
Throughout the afternoon, you can browse a variety of union and community group stalls; we encourage you to chat with them to hear what they are passionate about.
*Sausage sizzle
Keeping with tradition, the free sausage sizzle will be open to all from 1.00pm.
*Sunset Markets
Following their success from the Bathers Beach Saturday Night Markets, we are thrilled to have the tasty treats from the Sunset Markets join in on the May Day fun. Try their selection of festival ready food, from burritos to doughnuts which will be on sale throughout the afternoon.

Thank you to everyone who made May Day 2010 a great celebration

Thank you to everyone who turned out to help us celebrate May Day. A fantastic day was enjoyed by thousands of people at the Fremantle Esplanade Reserve.

The theme for May Day this year was ‘No WorkChoices in WA’ and a big turn out sent a strong message to our politicians that the workers of WA and their families do not want a repeat of John Howard’s anti-worker WorkChoices legislation.

The traditional May Day march through Fremantle was addressed by Maritime Union Secretary Chris Cain before returning to the Esplanade to hear from UnionsWA Secretary Simone McGurk and some workers affected by poor state government decisions regarding their employment conditions and privatisation of public services. This was followed by a great afternoon of entertainment in the sun with fantastic bands, stalls from a huge range of unions and community organisations, free rides and kids entertainment. Judging by the queues for the free sausage sizzle attendance was even better than expected so thank you to everyone who came down and made the day a true celebration of the WA labour movement.
