WA Unions support National Disability Insurance Scheme

Unions in WA today joined people with disability, their carers and service providers in a march through Perth in support of the Every Australian Count campaign seeking the full implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Simone McGurk, Secretary UnionsWA said:

“Unions won workers access to rehabilitation services and income compensation when they acquire a disability through work.

“Now is the time to ensure that how someone acquires a disability does not prejudice the care they receive.

“That is what the Every Australian Counts campaign and the National Disability Insurance Scheme is all about.

“Too often family members have to give up their job to care for loved ones with a disability.

“Too often unpaid carers go without respite.

“The Australian Services Union recently won a landmark pay equity case, with Fair Work Australia handing down an historic decision to increase wages for workers in the non-government community services sector.

“The basis for that decision was that women comprise more than 80% of the community service sector workforce and that their work has traditionally been undervalued because of their gender.

“Many of these workers providing care for people with disability.

“The detail and funding for the National Disability Insurance Scheme will be important to ensure that the conditions of employment for carers are fair.”
