SOS call for public services
Monday, 17 October 2011 08:37

An overwhelming majority of West Australians are sending out an SOS to the State Government to save the state’s services.

This is one of the findings of the largest ever WA community survey on public services, conducted by UnionsWA.

More than 7,000 people from all over Western Australia had their say about the services they most want to save.

The survey was launched in response to concerns by public sector workers about deteriorating public services.

“Unions throughout WA felt they needed to respond to those concerns but we also wanted to know what the public thought about their services,” said Simone McGurk, Secretary of UnionsWA.

“We started the online survey and handed out thousands of hardcopies to the public. The findings are quite staggering.”

Respondents across the state were asked their opinions on the State Government’s current policy agenda of public sector cut backs, under-funding and privatisation.

The survey included question on people’s attitudes towards privatisation, the quality of the services in their area, the impact of budget cuts, their faith in the Barnett’ Government’s ability to cater for our growing state and the importance of workplace conditions in attracting and retaining staff in the public sector.

“It’s clear that the people of WA need to be heard, and in this survey, they have spoken and are sending a very loud and clear SOS to the Barnett Government,” Ms McGurk said.

Ms McGurk will also be launching the five-point Save Our Services Action which she’s hoping thousands of West Australians will sign on to.

“It’s no use just doing a survey and not coming up with some sort of plan to take the people’s concerns to the government. We’ve drawn out the major findings of the survey and will be calling on Premier Barnett to actually do something to give people the services they need, and deserve.”
