Unions welcome workers' compensation reforms

Unions have welcomed the passing through the WA Parliament of long-overdue changes to workers’ compensation legislation.

Age discrimination in Western Australia’s workers’ compensation legislation has now been abolished.

Unions have long been calling for changes as the previous legislation was blatantly unfair to workers over the age of 64, who were previously entitled to only one year of income payments.
The other significant change recently passed is the extension of the safety net which ensures seriously injured workers are protected if their employer is uninsured.
This change means that WorkCover WA will meet the costs of damages awarded by the Court if negligence is proven and the employer does not have insurance.
