News News Community and unions rally against privatisation in hospitals

Hundreds of health workers and representatives of numerous WA unions took part in a community rally organised by the LHMU and the Health Services Union outside Premier Barnett’s office. The rally was held to demonstrate against the Barnett Government’s plans to privatise services in several public hospitals including the new Fiona Stanley Hospital.

As well as announcing their intentions to engage Serco - a private multi-national company with limited experience in Australian health delivery - to operate and manage non-clinical services at Fiona Stanley Hospital, the Barnett Government is also currently tendering for the wholesale privatisation of Midland Hospital which will result in another public hospital being run by a private company.

The rally was addressed by HSU Secretary Dan Hill, LHMU Assistant Secretary Carolyn Smith, Opposition Leader Eric Ripper and health workers who spoke about their experiences of hospital privatisation in the 1990s and the poor outcomes it resulted in for patients and staff.

The rally had great attendance from LHMU and HSU members as well good support from the broader union movement with the ASU, CEPU, CFMEU, CSA, WAPOU, ACTU and UnionsWA all in attendance.
