Maximum Confusion at Near Fatality Pluto LNG Site
Wednesday, 09 September 2009 14:52

A near miss fatality on the Pluto LNG site caused maximum confusion yesterday when various safety regulators denied jurisdictional responsibility.

The confusion put at risk proper investigation on the accident-prone site.

A worker was hit on the back of the head with a crane sling while unloading pipes off a vessel. He was medivaced off the vessel and is now in a serious condition in hospital.

"The real concern here is that we had three different government safety bodies all denying responsibility for the investigation on this matter," UnionsWA Secretary Simone McGurk said today.

WorkSafe, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and the National Offshore Petroleum Safety authority took 24 hours arguing among themselves before Worksafe finally decided they would look into the incident.

"It took calls from workers on site, the Maritime Union of Australia and UnionsWA before we got a definite answer from Worksafe," UnionsWA Secretary Simone McGurk said.

The MUA has raised serious concerns about the lack of jurisdictional clarity regulating safety between at-sea vessels, off shore facilities such as oil rigs, and the port.

"Already on this Pluto job we've had a number of serious accidents. This mess between the safety regulators is absolutely no help in trying to lift safety standards in the oil and gas industry," MUA Secretary Chris Cain said.

"MUA members are furious at the delays over clearing up this issue. They are prepared to down tools if that's what it takes to get employers, and the government, to take notice," Chris Cain said.

"As the company responsible for the Pluto Project, Woodside in particular needs to take responsibility," Chris Cain said
