News News Rising WA suicide rate

UnionsWA today called for a cooperative effort among governments, employers, unions and community groups in response to the release today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics of new data showing that contrary to national trends, suicide rates in WA are rising, particularly in non-metropolitan WA.  Rates remain highest among men and Indigenous Australians.

Meredith Hammat, UnionsWA President, said:

“Comparing suicide rates from 2001-2005 with 2006-2012, the ABS has found that Australia-wide these have fallen, however rates have increased in WA."

“These deaths remain highest among men and among Indigenous Australians, where unemployment is very high."

“The rate has risen in Perth, from 11.4 to 12.2 per 100,000 people and the increase in the rest of WA from 15.1 to 18.5 is a real worry."

“There are many factors that contribute to suicide, particularly poor mental health.  Workplace stress, bullying, unsociable hours of work and related loss of time with family are also factors."

“Governments, employers, unions and community groups can and should work together to put solutions in place.  These might include measures allowing people to better juggle family, community and work."

“In the past occupational health and safety measures, such as elected OH & S and union representatives in workplaces, have led to some improvements in reducing injuries and fatalities."

“We need a better cooperative effort to reduce suicides in WA.”
