Bill accounts for local skilled jobs

Unions today commented on the release by the Leader of the Opposition of a policy statement ‘Jobs for the Future’ that highlighted the recent introduction of the Skilled Jobs (Benefits from the Boom) Bill 2012.

UnionsWA President Meredith Hammat said:

“The Skilled Jobs Bill and Opposition policy statement released today are welcome measures".

“Resource companies must be held to account for training and held to account to ensure Australian manufacturers can compete fairly".

“The first step in good planning is to know where we are and where we are going".

“According to recent data from the National Centre for Vocational Education and Research, compared with when the Barnett Government came to office in 2008 we now have 2,200 fewer people in training for automotive, engineering and construction jobs".

“Our training record in WA is appalling".

“With all machinery and vehicles that need to be maintained as well as construction work you’d expect more training in these critical areas".

“In fact we are going backwards.”

Steve McCartney, State Secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union said:

“Right now we don’t have a clear idea of the local content and jobs resulting from major resource projects".

“Too often with claims about local content it’s a case of ‘lies and damned statistics’."

“This Bill will put into law a requirement to ensure greater transparency and accountability".

“Big business and the Barnett Government are just too cosy and the benefits of boom are not being shared".

“We need to know what skills are being built, particularly for the future of WA manufacturing".

“Resource companies must be held to account for training and held to account to ensure Australian manufacturers can compete fairly".
