News News Hundreds raise thousands for UnionsWA Pakistan Appeal
Over 200 people joined UnionsWA for their “Popcorn for Pakistan” fundraiser at Cinema Paradiso in Northbridge on Thursday November 11 to raise over $4,000 for APHEDA’s Pakistan Appeal.

The money raised will go directly to APHEDA and will help in the rebuilding of Pakistan. The floodwaters may be subsiding, but the situation is just as dire.

The funds will provide the victims with provide food, drinking water and medicines as well as kitchen utensils, sheets to be used as bedding, and clothes to those still affected by the floods.

APHEDA also assists on a political front to urge the Pakistan government to change its budget priorities by pushing for the cancellation of Pakistan's external debt and cutting defence spending and shift budget spending to rehabilitation of flood victims.

Members from Unions across WA as well as those representing a number of community groups attended the screening of “Made in Dagenham” a film centred on the plight of women striving for equal pay in the 1960’s.

Included in the crowd was a large group from the Australian Services Union who are fighting their own pay equity campaign at present. More than 40 years after the machinists battle in Dagenham women in WA are paid on average 24 percent less than men.
