News News Campaign silence on IR Laws dishonest

The WA minister responsible for industrial relations, Troy Buswell, has announced significant changes to work laws affecting up to 150,000 WA workers, but refuses to give detail.

Mr Buswell used a conference held in the south-west on the weekend to announce his intention to make significant changes to WA work laws, but has not given detail on what the changes will be.

Meanwhile WA unions continue to ask for dialogue with Mr Buswell over his intentions in relation to work laws.

"Since the state election we have been asking for the WA Liberal Party's policy on industrial relations laws," UnionsWA Secretary Dave Robinson said today.

"We have been given no answers. In fact, Mr Buswell has yet to respond to our request to meet with him. Instead, we hear announcements affecting tens of thousands of WA workers made through the media, and providing no detail.

"Is this what we can expect from Mr Buswell?" Is it reminiscent of the Howard Government who refused before the election to detail significant changes to its work laws, and then ambushed the community with WorkChoices?

"Does Buswell hold the WA workforce in such contempt and disregard that he wouldn't come clean on this before the election and now point blank refuses to meet with their representatives?"

Despite federal work laws now applying to many in the private sector, state industrial laws still apply to approximately 120,000 in the public sector, and those in the private sector who are not corporations.

"Work laws were a major issue in the last federal election, when there was extensive public debate about unfair dismissals, individual contracts and an award safety net."  Dave Robinson said.

"Those workers covered by state laws have a right to know what the state government intention is on these important issues."
