18 weeks paid maternity leave a good start

UnionsWA today welcomed the Productivity Commission's draft recommendation for 18 weeks of paid maternity leave.

"The Commission's recommendation finally puts us in the same ballpark as other OECD countries", said UnionsWA Secretary Dave Robinson.

"What is disappointing is that employer groups are crying foul over the recommendation that they pay the leave and recoup the cost from the government.

We believe it is a sensible recommendation that will ensure the scheme is part of the employment relationship, with the worker and the employer maintaining contact, rather than a relationship between new mothers and Centrelink.

It is also important for employers to provide a top up of the minimum wage, demonstrating a commitment to their workforce. Modern employers, particularly in WA, will see the benefits of this in retaining and attracting their skilled staff".
